I played rugby at the Coast Guard Academy, back in the day, and we didn't wear mouth guards or have any kind of padding or protection except our indifference to pain. It was hard-nosed skull-cracking and there weren't any pantywaists around. I remember one time a guy on the other team got his front teeth knocked out and we all stopped the match to take pictures, including the refs!

If you lost, you gave your shirt to the winners. It was this exact same kind of tough, beefy, Made in America clobber that I remember. None of that fancy nylon stretchy sh*t you see today.
